Why is online shopping a ruthless hellscape where people can snipe the very last item directly from your cart if you don't finalize and submit the order fast enough?

Why do we live in a world where "Fuck, LastPass took too long to work and fill out the password confirmation screen, I'm probably going to lose it now" is a thing?

I swear to Arceus, if I go through the whole process of add to cart --> checkout --> password (again) --> enter billing info --> enter shipping info --> review everything --> submit --> "ERROR we removed one of your items from your cart because it's now out of stock, also you can't check out because your cart is empty" one more time....

That sounds like a really shitty storefront. Who designs an online store like that. Seriously.

That's piss-poor design. It should be no effort to temporarily earmark an item off the available inventory the moment someone puts it in their cart.

If they buy the item, remove it from the available inventory entirely. If they remove it from the cart, un-earmark it.
