No, of course I'm not playblogging two full-length Pokemon games at the same time. Don't be silly.
However, while I was still playing my way through SoulSilver, oops, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon released. And because they're the hot new game that just launched, Nintendo is going to be celebrating and supporting them with a ton of Mystery Gift giveaways for probably the next long while. And for Mystery Gift to work, you need a save file.
This isn't like last time where I had to get to the first Pokemon Center (so I could trade with myself later.) All I have to do is get far enough for the game to start, so I can save, quit, and get back to SoulSilver. Once that file is there, then I can just collect all the Mystery Gifts as they come over the next... probably year or so, and whenever I do get around to this game, I'll have them all and they'll be waiting for me.
However, while I'm not committing to playing this game in a timely manner, I am leaning strongly toward playblogging it whenever I do. The SoulSilver run has been going very well so far, it's a lot of work but also a lot of fun, and the unexpected explosion of comments is really keeping me motivated. If this keeps up, then yeah sure why not. Which means that, uh, I guess I should probably chronicle this? I can always change my mind about blogging Ultra Moon later. What I can't do is pick this game up again two or three years from now, decide, "Hey, I should really blog this," and then try to reconstruct my thoughts about the opening and prologue from ancient memories because I didn't write anything down when it was fresh.
Besides, taking an entire entry just to get past the title screen is what I do. It's the Celine Pokemon Playblog Experience.
So, for future posterity, The attract mode/title screen intro is pretty great. Honestly, I don't have as much to say about it as I did about the SoulSilver one, but that's because there aren't memories to compare and contrast here. This isn't a remake of some beloved childhood thing, so I'm not going to talk about what this or that scene used to mean to me growing up and how I feel about it being in 3D now. This is all new territory. Thus, an intro that's full of flashy visuals and music that basically boil down to "BEHOLD! POKEMON!" seems about right. I will say it does its job nicely and I'm pretty hooked already.
But oh, man, that's nothing compared to once I hit Start.
Okay, first off, even the theme for the language selection screen is... epic. I know I'm just setting options at this point, but I already feel pumped. I feel really excited about choosing my language and then tearing into this game, even though I'm not actually doing so yet.
Oh, wait, I spoke too soon about getting excited from this music. As soon as you pick your language, the song kicks into full gear, and I am pretty sure I just came.
Here's the intro, ride along with me.
There's a computer-like interface with an icon that announces we have a call from Professor Suspiciously Hot Dad, which is played out to look like a video call. He even starts by reaching for the frame like a selfie and tilting it and... okay I know I'm easily impressed because I'm playing a generation 4 game right now but this is awesome shut up.
The "Are you a boy or a girl?" question is replaced with "Which photo should I use for your Trainer Passport?" with these options. This is another awesome change. I choose the bottom row, second from the left, the pale white girl with the dark hair. Name? Celine, of course.
The dialogue sets the scene that my family (well, my mom) and I are moving Alola Islands and should be arriving shortly, and the Professor will let everyone know we're coming. The call ends, and we pan out to show that actually was a computer screen, and now we're looking at Celine in her room as her mom urges her to come help her with these boxes. The camera then pans to a magazine with a picture of a futuristic Apple Store-looking setting, which scene-transitions to an in medias res chase scene.
Without explaining who these people are or what's going on, we have a girl in white running from some... guards? also in white. The girl has something in her bag, which activates and teleports them out just when it looks like they've been caught. Version difference: in the Ultras, the second set of guards (the ones she runs into after she rounds that corner) look different, like some sort of clockwork cyborg Guy Fawkes Mask getup. I'm sure eventually we'll know what that's all about.
For now, we cut to three months later, where Mom is joyously soaking in the first evening spent under Alola's calm moon (because I'm playing Ultra Moon.) She sends our family Meowth to come fetch me, because it's help-with-boxes time again. The Meowth finds me fast asleep on a suspiciously thin and uncomfortable-looking mattress. With some effort, I drag my carcass out of bed, open up a menu, and save.
See you in a few years!
