Pokemon Moon prologue preliminary thoughts
Oct. 3rd, 2017 07:12 amNo, I'm not falling into another Pokemon game, because I'm already neck-deep in one Pokemon game. It's just that I have Moon sitting on the shelf, unplayed, and there are a bunch of Mystery Gift event giveaways they're currently handing out that I may as well grab while I can. I preordered Ultra Moon, and even that can sit on the shelf until I'm actually ready to play it, but I may as well 1) play the upgraded version instead if I wasn't already tied to the original, and 2) have all those event giveaways waiting for me when I do. There won't be a rush at that point, but I at least need to get them first.
So, some observations from Moon's prologue, on my quest to at least get far enough to find an actual shop with the Mystery Gift delivery person in it. Because first-glance blind reactions are hard to replicate, and if (if, and we'd be talking years down the road) I ever playblog Ultra Moon like I'm doing SoulSilver, I don't want my unscripted first impressions lost to time.
The plan was to play until I found a store so I could get those Mystery Gifts, but 40 minutes in, we still do not appear to be even close to one. God damn, this game is more Star Ocean 2 than Star Ocean 2.
I really like all three starters this gen. Like, really like. This is probably the toughest starter choice I've faced in any game this entire series, because I want them all. I am fairly certain the eventual winner is going to be Poofsphere the Grassowl, because the Fluff/Owl dual-typing is a very unique type combination that I cannot resist. However, Popplio is adorable and instantly endearing, and has the potential to have the most heart-eyes-inducing over-the-top pretty final form since Mega Ampharos. Hell, even Litten is great in a "someone accidentally made their DeviantArt Warrior Cats OC canon" sort of way. Hell yes I want to burninate the countryside with XxXBloodclawXxX.
To that end, my brilliant plan was to pick Popplio here, because I'm importing all this stuff to Ultra Moon someday and play that instead anyway. That way I could pick Rowlet in the real game, Bank my AU Popplio back, and have both.
That was my plan. It still may be, but....
The way they handled the starter choice aaaaaa. I cried. I'm sorry, I admit it, I straight up goddamn cried like a sentimental housewife at the end of a heartwarming Based On A True Story Family Channel movie about hero dogs. I already loved Popplio, anyway, but how can you get through that scene and not absolutely adore and treasure the precious bond you and your Pokemon have? This is how Ethan feels about his Marill, isn't it.
I still have to get my Rowlet in Ultra Moon, but they just made it really hard to ignore my bond with this adrable little boop. Even if the entire idea was "I can't decide and I love them all, so I'll just trade with myself and keep them all," I actually kind of feel like I'm in a love triangle now. It already feels like it would be weird to go through that ceremony and then have my Popplio treated like an outsider from another game (complete with the whole "gains more experience but disobeys you" thing, presumably.) I actually feel like a complete monster for even thinking about trading him away after that, even if it's to myself.
I can't not pick Rowlet in Ultra Moon, though.
God damn it Game Freak, why is the starter choice so hard this time.
Oh, oops, I messed up bad and I think I am well and truly stuck at this point. I named my (already-beloved) Popplio Sammy, after an old CD-i game my sister and I used to play a lot growing up (because my grandparents had a CD-i for whatever reason) called Sammy the Sea Lion or something like that. I wanted to link to it in this post, but I couldn't find a game by that name anywhere, even on Mobygames. If they don't have it, that must mean I misremembered the name. Turns out, yep, it was actually Sandy's Circus Adventure. Oh, God. Well, there is no way I'm playing the wrong game all the way through until I find the Name Rater--even just looking for a store is dragging on long enough--but I won't be able to change that name after I trade up to Ultra Moon, and I can't even restart this file because those Mystery Gifts are specifically tied to it. Fuck.
Uh, well, let's just pretend it was a gender-flip name because Sandy the sea lion was a girl and Sammy is a boy and I totally meant to do that.
... and that's Moon so far!

Date: 2017-10-03 03:52 pm (UTC)Also: this.
Edit: as an aside, I love this series of Lycanroc comics because it gives me this terrible mental image of Lycanroc as a cool fluffy onee-san who turns into a raging pervert cougar at night.

Date: 2017-10-09 02:00 am (UTC)I was going to pick Rowlet for my second, but... but it rotates the wrong way when it's doing it's cute rotation.
And my brainweird can't take Rotating Wrong. So when I start up my second game I'll have to either do "Tony Takes Up Wrestling", double down on my Scream Seal, or just never care for my Rowlet until after its first evolution.
