Animal Crossing New Horizons Roundup: It Begins

People who weren't there with me on Tumblr when New Leaf was out and don't know what they're in for: Hi there's an Animal Crossing game and it is my sworn duty to chronicle our adventures in our town. I will try to limit these posts for the sake of spam, but that means each one will have like a zillion shots built up between them. This will last until I get tired of expending the effort and stop, probably.




I already said this in the [Ultra] Sun/Moon games, but I really love this move toward asking your "style" (and taking the PMD approach of simply never using pronouns, ever) rather than the "Professor Oak: Are you a BOY or a GIRL?" approach. Well done.



The default options are a little ehh, but more hairstyles and such come later. And, I mean, as far as starter looks go, it's at least way better than the New Leaf options, and the upgrades aren't nearly as hard to unlock as Shampoodle was.



Oh, geez. Here we stalled out for a while, paralyzed with indecision. We even took it to a vote and even that was a tie: Ardei and I were leaning toward the first option (upper-left corner), while xyzzysqrl and Sara liked the fourth (lower-right). I feel like the first one is the more sensible option: a good balance of everything, no wasted room, but everything is so perfect that it might accidentally be a bit... plain? While four isn't unplayable or anything but it's kind of the "be wild, live a little" option at least compared to one. I will admit I'm curious about Lake Wishbone in the corner there. So yeah, we went with the fourth after a lot of deliberation.



We started out with Canberra and Sterling! I didn't really like the former at first glance but I'm starting to warm up to her now, I think. Sterling was and is instantly awesome.

Celine: That is a fantastic armor shirt he comes with, which will doubtless be replaced by whatever weird nonsense the RNG picks out for him once he starts mingling.

Sara: Wait... how does the visor in his helmet... like... work?

Celine: Like goggles on a Digimon protagonist. *nod*



I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm still importing Pashmina as soon as I unlock the amiibo reader, but... we can be friends, at least. Sure.

Fortunately, the first set of expanded appearance options unlock pretty early. Also the Switch Online mobile app seamlessly reads QR codes you generate from New Leaf/find on the Internet/etc. and beams them into New Horizons (it's... actually genuinely cool and impressive tech, right there, and super handy) so behold the triumphant return of the ZZTee.

Anyway this probably won't be the 100% final look forever either, especially as clothing and hairstyle options continue to unlock, but this is at least already a lot better than where we started, as per Animal Crossing tradition.
