Lost Sheep footage!
Mar. 25th, 2019 08:30 amAt long last, here it... mostly is.
This is an unlisted video for now, because it's not the official version yet. I have big plans for eventually getting a YouTube game review show off the ground. I taught myself spriting in Pixel Studio and composing in FamiTracker just so I could make the intro splash screen bumper things. My first episode will probably be Family Dog (and will probably make a lot of the same points with the same basic mood as my COMPLETE entry for it) just to set the tone for what kind of show I want this to be. (Conversely, this one. This is exactly what I'm aiming for. The only thing I would change is that my show probably wouldn't have the live-action skit intro.) Once it's established, I'll do a thing on The Story of Jonah, probably as episode 2 or 3.
But that's going to be months down the road, and I didn't want to wait. This is footage from an undiscovered game, something that you might be among the first people in the post-Internet world to see. Of course I'm going to have a "just so you know what Lost Sheep looks and plays like" leak in advance of the official review.
But here it is. After everything... after the entire saga in the Interlight tag, I present to you: Lost Sheep.
This would not have happened without your continued support. I hope you find the whole thing as... you know, worth it as I do. Thank you.

Date: 2019-03-25 08:33 pm (UTC)β Maybe, just maybe, you'll find that you get a popularity spike which causes a revival of that game, and a remake, and merchandising, and you'll get an offer to have first pick of licensing agreements to sell merchandise for a big cut of the profits because you were the one with the audience!
And you could call it the Lost Sheep Leased Shop!
sorry not sorry

Date: 2019-03-26 12:51 pm (UTC)This reminds me a lot of the “adventure” games I had in school on the BBC Micro - often they were based on blind guessing to avoid running into the evil witch/wolf/coyote (unless you found the teachers’ manual and read which floors of the building or branches of the tree were traps). I wonder if they knew exactly what they were doing, avoiding any strategy in favour of making the game just busywork so that it would have to be tried and retried many times.

Date: 2019-03-27 03:09 am (UTC)But no, I'd forgotten the layout for the most part. Anything you see in the video that looks like foreknowledge (such as "I'm about to introduce the trouble mechanic..." before going downstairs, knowing full well that was trouble) was because I'd played it a couple times as a test to make sure it worked before I recorded it.
And even this backfired a little! The maniacal face of the "Avoid the black doors!" guy near the door maze has been seared into my brain for decades and I knew this video wouldn't be complete without including him. I did some preliminary offscreen playing and testing just to find where he was so that I could include him, eventually discovering after a lot of searching that you can reach him by starting from the King's Court, going north three times (I think?) and then west. Confident in that knowledge, I promptly botched my second run of this video by misremembering that, starting from the King's Court and going north twice and then west, and getting into trouble. Fortunately, I got lucky with where the warps dropped me off and was able to run into that guy anyway!
That plus moments like some trouble in the first run dropping me off right at the exit, or that time in the second where it dropped me off in the exact same room... I'm so glad I recorded those runs; you really can't get those kinds of talking points on purpose. :)
