The main lands of Istaria provide a very guarded view of dragons, especially when approached by other, more bipedal races. We know they are typically very serious, and that there is a major faction-defining schism over whether to be openly speciesist or just politely speciesist.

In this daring exposé, I will roll a dragon go deep undercover to capture the hidden dragon secrets that they don't want the naka-duskael to know.

Read the "ONGOING" writeup first and take it as a warning! Istaria is... old, and maybe a touch on the janky side. I'm having an absolute blast reconnecting with some serious memories here, but if you haven't played Horizons and don't have those memories or the nostalgia boost, it's possible your impression might be a bit more negative.

But like, if you read that and were like "aww yeah I am all about the 2003 MMO aesthetic and this looks fun?" It is. I enjoy it and I would very much love to play with you. :) I mean, if this were a bad game then I'd have taken advantage of their free promo period to get some screenshots and scratch an old itch before leaving again, but instead I caved and subscribed and am giving them money so I can keep playing because it's good.

I just... maybe feel like people used to more modern MMOs might need to make sure they know what they're getting themselves into here. XP

I mean I don't always like the direction more modern MMOs are taking... I quit WoW because of moderization changes I hated, and Guild Wars 2 is nice but... weird.

On the other hand, I'll miss a lot of the QoL changes that modern MMOs have added in...

I mean, I can always just try the free promo period and see how I feel about it, right?

....Honestly I probably won't play longterm because of money, in the end. I'm on limited income, so I have to watch my subscriptions. Right now I've got a massive sink of $60 going to two Minecraft servers I run and I'd rather get stabbed in the leg than lose my Minecraft server budget.

An excellent point! Between the current promo and free access level subscriptions, there's enough to have a look around for sure.

(Oh, speaking of the current promo: it is 100% okay to either turn music off after a while or get into the /resources/sound/music folder and overwrite mus_event_gnomekindle.mp3 with some peaceful Elder Scrolls exploration theme you won't mind hearing a zillion times. It NORMALLY DOES NOT SOUND LIKE THIS I SWEAR but Gnome Christmas is omnipresent as part of the current event I guess.)

And I was able to get full Basic Access features without the Free Access throttling until I went ahead and subscribed anyway, but I'll be honest: I have no idea if that's for old returning accounts or just anyone can get in on that until the holiday's over.

I think the EQ2 holiday event is already over... and I forgot to finish grinding for the item I wanted. :p
Thank goodness the currency will carry over to next year.
I'll see about trying it out maybe tomorrow, then.
Should I get on a specific server, or is the game small enough to not have multiple servers?

It's small enough to have three servers: one normal one, one RP one, and one test one.
