Kitten Adventures in City Park was something my Steam discovery queue tossed at me today, and it looked very short, very cute, and very free, so what the heck.

You are a kitten with apparently the most forgetful owner in the world. After a fun-filled day at the park, she awakens in horror the next morning to realize she lost her, like, four different items in a row, which you as the brave kitten must return to the park to find.

This is a very basic point-and-click obviously meant for young children. Click your away around charming hand-drawn screens, click on the objects when you find them, and return home. The umbrella is hidden perhaps a bit too well and I got walkthrough-requiring stuck on that one, but other than that, this was a cute little diversion for an evening.

The game is free, but for $5 you can get the Bonus Content pack which is mostly just some extras (the soundtrack, concept sketches, etc.) and a way to leave a tip and thank the devs if you enjoyed their game. I probably won't do that right now but I have it on my wishlist so I won't forget. I think they earned it.

Edit:
I'm revisiting this because I now own the Bonus stuff and it would be criminal of me not to mention how cute that is.

The Kitten Adventures in City Park Bonus Content pack, in addition to the warm fuzzy you get from officially supporting the developer, gives you high-resolution scans of all the game's screens, sketches and unused art, giant wallpaper images (there is so much art in here, you guys,) music, and more. My personal favorite is a six minute real-life video of the developer giving a guided tour of the room where she made this game as well as the actual city park in her hometown that inspired it, all while wearing antenna deely-boppers. If that doesn't sell you on this pack, I don't know what will.

The video itself is in Russian, but it comes with subtitle files for a variety of languages including English, so understanding it is no trouble at all. Watching it, it instantly becomes clear that this game is a passion project that means a great deal to its author. She smiles widely when proudly showing off the plushie who became that big cat who gives you hints and advice in-game. She very frequently brings up her childhood memories of the park, what parts of it are different from her childhood and how she remembers them, and how happy she is to include things like this in her game. It makes not only the video but the game itself, in retrospect, feel so much more personal. I played Kitten Adventures and liked it because it's charming and cute, but now I love it and I'm honored to have played it because the author invited us players into such a big part of her life and her treasured childhood memories.

Kitten Adventures in City Park, both the game and especially the bonus content, is one of the most wholesome things I've seen in ages.

I did okay on the umbrella but got stuck on the socks for a long time (comparatively) because I had already tried to DO that and wasn't allowed (yet).
