Random vocabulary questions
May. 29th, 2017 08:32 pmBecause apparently people are actually using Dreamwidth now that we're all here. And I'm a writer. And I have a couple situations where the word I always use for them is wrong, but these are situations that come up a lot and it'd be really nice to have a word for them. Maybe you can help!
1) Basically the mood of this icon. Been dealing with too much for too long, at wits' end. The full context of the panel this crop is from: King Koopa and Lemmy are having a "Are you sure you know where this water main is?" conversation, the exact dialogue is responding to the previous panel's assurances with "You said that the last ten times!" (Lemmy in the background: "But since I've blown away all the other sections, this has to be it! I'll use four bombs on this one!") I originally entitled this icon "Exasperation" but later found that implies more annoyance and irritation over whatever they'll apparently never stop having to deal with, whereas I'm looking for more of a vague stressed "oh God" reaction.
2) My Splice post reminded me of this, because its later levels definitely induced it in me and that was one of the problems I had with that game. Is there a word for when there's just too much to process on the screen at once and you get overwhelmed? Think Tohou-style bullet hell games or those impossibly fast endgame DDR songs. "I can't play that game; once it get to the point where there were hundreds of arrows on the screen I just get _____ and kind of go o_o and my brain shuts down." I'm used to saying snow-blind but that's clearly wrong. Other metaphors/references like that welcome, if there's a good one.

Date: 2017-05-30 04:47 am (UTC)For (1), I can't think of one right now but maybe I will later.
For (2), “sensory overload” is sort of obvious but a bit more generic than you might want. “dazzled” has more flavor but is more ambiguous. Plain “overwhelmed” works if there's enough context. I can't think of a specifically visual one right now…

Date: 2017-06-04 10:40 pm (UTC)For the first one (I love that icon forever, btw, partly because King Koopa > Bowser) I'm thinking maddened, or just "so done".

Date: 2017-06-04 11:55 pm (UTC)Back when I was younger and more into DDR and the like, even then I was still a total novice at it. Not because I wasn't physically agile enough; if I somehow learned what a dance was I could probably do it (with enough practice anyway,) but I never even got that far because I just... can't read that many arrows. That... that's too many arrows. Please put some of them back.
I forget, have I shown you the comic that both my Koopa icons came from? It is solid gold. It also has a headcanon that completely ruins Mario 64's ending, years before there was a such thing as Mario 64. It's also near impossible to find unless some collector posts it for a fortune on eBay (and even that comes and goes availability-wise) but remind me next time you're in town and I would be happy to let you peruse my copy. :D
Actually, I'm wondering if it's worth scanning and posting it, since no one has a linkable online version and good luck finding your own copy. I mean, it's practically historical preservation at that point. The problem is I have no idea what I'm doing re: how to scan/photo/whatever and digitize it and make the images all high-res and readable without destroying the physical copy/having that void near the center of the page because of the elevated spine/etc. If there's a way to do it and someone's willing to help with that or at least advise, I'll totally do it.

Date: 2017-06-05 03:07 am (UTC)I *might* own those comics. I subscribed to them long ago, if we are thinking of the same ones. So I have 4-5 ... not hardcover, but cardboard cover collections, and a few individual comics, too. https://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario_Adventures They had that cute King Koopa rather than Bowser. I'll have to find them and see if I can digitize them with my Cam Scanner app on my phone one day! I also have a Game Boy comic in the same binder as those ones, and a few of the Captain N comics.
Here's the Game Boy comic, a bit further down: http://www.dorkly.com/post/72929/5-wtf-comics-based-on-your-favorite-nintendo-characters/page:2

Date: 2017-06-06 02:20 am (UTC)That wasn't the one I'm thinking of, though (and I think that was Bowser anyway?) Mine was one of the issues from a weird series Valiant did, specifically this one. (
You have a cam scanner app on your phone? How does that work? Like I said, I am seriously interested in digitizing my copy of Meet the Koopa Kids just for the historical preservation (and to make everyone I know read it) because you may have noticed it's going for triple-digit prices in the out-of-print collector's market according to that site I just linked. D:
Also, holy goodness dear, that Dorkly article... those are indeed some weird comics. Clearly the moral of this story is that us American kids missed out on the insane glory that was German Nintendo Power. (Not gonna lie, Satan there and Man-Bat Link are like super cute.)

Date: 2017-06-06 04:02 am (UTC)http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adventures-of-the-Super-Mario-Brothers-1991-8-VF-8-0-/132195589897 I think this is the last one I received in my subscription. It was these- the Adventures of Super Mario Bros comics, with the Saturday Morning Cartoon King Koopa bae, heheh.
Yep, SO MUCH Stanley!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adventures-of-the-Super-Mario-Bros-4-May-comic-book-Nintendo-Comics-System-NM-/172712205041 I think this is one of the "collections" like I have, with the thicker cover rather than just paper.
Yeah! The Valiant ones! That's exactly the word I was missing to search successfully. A quick Google search of "Mario Valiant Comics" was a giant nostalgia punch to the gut. Piranha Sue! http://www.totalmediabridge.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SMB_Sue2.jpg
And.... this! http://catfish.it.cx/trsrockin/trsrockin.com/images/smb_no2_cover.jpg
I want to go read them again SO BADLY right now but I just realized that the folder they are in is in one of my giant plastic bins in the back room, with 2 other bins on top, plus my entire Christmas tree and my Halloween decorations stacked on top because horrifying storage Jenga is the way to go. All the way to the ceiling, baby!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intsig.camscanner&hl=en CamScanner. This app rules like a king on speed. I've used it to create PDF files when I needed to submit paperwork in a hurry. It does a great job of auto adjusting things and making proper files out of them. Give it a shot!
Yeah.... Man-Bat Link. Damn. I didn't know I needed that in my life.

Date: 2017-06-10 09:12 pm (UTC)Oh my goodness Koopa's pose on that first cover, though. I, uh... excuse me a second. *fans self*
Eee, Piranha Sue! She's in the Meet the Koopa Kids one I have, but like Stanley, I had no idea she was actually a recurring character from, like, the rest of them too.
CamScanner does indeed look neat! It doesn't really fix the biggest problem I have with digitizing this comic, which is that you can't really get a page nice and flat when it's part of an old bound comic and you really don't want to damage the spine. If that weren't an issue then the enhancement features in CamScanner are definitely awesome, so I will absolutely want to use this one to actually capture the image... once I figure out how to isolate the page. XD
