I've been working on a list of RPG equipment references. Like, if I ever make my own RPG or something, [livejournal.com profile] davidn's Crystal Towers 2 taught me that 3/4 of the fun of making a game is the shout-outs and references to whatever you happen to be into that you can cram absolutely everywhere. Thus, I figure there are enough notable pieces of equipment from other games I've played, dorky power metal I've heard, etc. that I could at least make a decent stab at filling an equipment list.

I've been slowly adding to the list every time one or two more ideas pop into mind, and by now, it's rather large.

[Swords and Daggers]
  • SORD.....
  • Short Sword
  • Iron Sword
  • Silver Sword
  • (Bastard Sword)
  • Crystalis
  • Brynhildr
  • Erdrick's Sword
  • Vandal Hearts
  • Narpas Sword
  • Crissaegrim
  • Dagger of Amon Ra
  • Emerald Sword
  • Outrage
  • Power Sword
  • Sword of Omens
  • Witchalok Blade
  • Power Blade
  • Metal Blade

[Hammers and Axes]
  • Fear No Anvil
  • Warhammer of Zillyhoo
  • Golden Axe
  • Hector's Hammer
  • Giant War Axe
  • Fireman's Axe
  • Stoic Club
  • Tink's Axe
  • Thinker Statue

[Musical instruments]
  • Recorder
  • Cobra Triangle
  • Musicalibur
  • Silver Harp
  • Fairy Flute
  • Silver Trumpet
  • Bell of the 7 Hells
  • Songbringer
  • Toby's Flute
  • Warp Whistle
  • Eight Melodies
  • Samson's Bell
  • Jealous Bass

[Spears]
  • Saekro'm
  • LeCarde Spear
  • Hedgehog Quill
  • 2x3dent
  • Snake Spear
  • Drago Fang
  • Seventh Needle
  • (Rattapede Stinger)

[Staves, spellbooks, crystals, and various wizard equipment like that]
  • Stones of Sunlight
  • Staff of Rain
  • Ball of Light
  • Four Orbs
  • Nekron's Book
  • Elian's Book
  • Sorcery Globe
  • Empiricist's Wand
  • Magatama

The ones in (parenthesis) are the ones that aren't game/movie/music/whatever references. Do you guys recognize the rest? (Mind comment spoilers for anyone else who wants to play along.)

And this will probably keep growing as more things slowly come to me, too.

I'd be a bit surprised if anyone who reads this doesn't get the reference the first spear makes.

A few personal notes:
Narpas Sword - Brilliant reference. Probably my favorite. :D
Sword of Omens - Does it grant its wielder a Scan-type ability?
Recorder - Wait...why did I just hit that orc with my homework?

"Once owned by a prince who prayed every single day for a revolution."

Sounds more like a description of the Sword of Dios to me. (Revolutionary Girl Utena, in case I'm the only member of Team Hatoful who's watched that.)

I got the reference rather quick (saw that video once back in DC...wasn't aware it ever hit meme status, though.) I was just saying what came to mind more for me.

RGU's been on my mind a lot lately, is all. (Mostly because I recall it being as much of a soul-wrenching mindscrew as BBL.)

the metal blade can swing in eight directions, but the power blade just comes back when you throw it

Next, add in a Giant Enemy Crab reference. . :3

Okay, well, I want to guess but I don't know how to hide this comment, so, uh... TRIVIA SPOILERS AHEAD?

SORD = Homestuck
Short Sword, Iron Sword, Silver Sword = Too frequent to say.
Crystalis = Crystalis, NES
Brynhildr = Generally Norse, but not sure about anything more specific.
Erdrick's Sword = Dragon Quest 1, 3
Vandal Hearts = Vandal Hearts! Ash uses it.
Narpas Sword = Thought it was Castlevania or Etrian Odyssey, but I just looked it up.
Crissagegrim = Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, although with that spelling it may be a parody - in SOTN it's "Crissaegrim"
Dagger of Amon Ra = Laura Bow

[Hammers and Axes]
Fear No Anvil = Gonna say Homestuck, without resorting to Google.
Warhammer of Zillyhoo = Definitely Homstuck.
Golden Axe = Sega Scrolling Slash 'em Up
Hector's Hammer = Castlevania: Lords of Shadow?
Thinker Statue = Hitting someone with the statue of The Thinker? Is it a reference to anything in particular?

[Musical instruments]
I don't know any of these, except the harps might be from Final Fantasy IV or V. Mind explaining them?
Oh,
Warp Whistle = Mario
Eight Melodies = Crystal Towers 2? Links Awakening?

[Spears]
LeCarde Spear = Castlevania Bloodlines
I get the feeling I should know a lot more of these.

[Staves, spellbooks, crystals, and various wizard equipment like that]
Four Orbs = CT2?
Empiricist's Wand = I had a feeling this was Homestuck, but I still had to look it up.
Magatama = This could be a lot of things. I'd have said Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, but with the aid of Google I'm saying Ace Attorney.

SPOILERS CONTINUE:

The Magatama is from Ace Attorney, as is the statue of The Thinker (it's the murder weapon in the first case of the first game).

These are actually really good (or my knowledge of popular geek culture is being revealed as quite poor) because I'm missing a lot of the references. I feel like I should recognise the Giant War Axe, but I can't quite place it. The other problem is, I keep reading multiple spurious meanings into things, without being sure if that's what's being referred to: Nekron's Book could be a reference to the villain from the Green Lantern comics, the final boss of FFIX, the robot-undead race from Warhammer 40,000 (although that's spelled with a 'c'), or (more likely, since none of them have famous books that I'm aware of) none of the above.

Saekro'm should obviously deal Holy-Elemental damage, and the Hedgehog Quill should allow the user to always strike first, regardless of their Agility stat (maybe deal additional damage against crystalline enemies, from the sonic damage? :P). And yes, the 'Recorder' should actually be someone's maths homework. Maybe they could play it like a drum, tapping their fingers on it? :P

I've always vowed that if I ever make a roguelike, on the 27th of every in-game month various colorful drupes would spawn.

If I may... I'm a sucker for obscure inside references.

Stones of Sunlight and Staff of Rain, well then of course you'd have to at some point in your game make a Rainbow Bridge. Maybe with a party of three war-like dragons.
