I said last time that I wouldn't obsessively 100% this game, and that I was done after getting every S-Rank and Challenge Fly (and clearing the bonus stage that unlocks.) I
tried to be done with this game. I really did.
It's just too good, you guys.
Not only is it good; it's also devilishly incremental in its challenges. "Oh, I don't care about getting all the Challenge Flies," I said, before I
accidentally got one or two of the easier ones. At that point, what was one or two more? "I don't need to S-Rank every stage," I said, "but this particular one is my favorite song, and it looks like I've almost got it if I can just nail that one last jump...." Everyone told me that Piranha Jungle's Challenge Fly (complete the stage without taking any hits or damage) was one of the hardest feats in the game, but by that point I was kind of into doing no-damage runs anyway. Every challenge and medal and Achievement is just one or two more steps after your last one, which means you may as well try for it. You already came this far, right?
They're also broken down beautifully. Look, getting 100 bubbles in X particular stage isn't so bad, because you don't have to worry about score or damage or anything else besides just collecting everything and reaching the finish line alive. Getting S-Rank in it isn't so bad, either, because at least you don't have to worry about the bubbles.
(A lot of those feats are even mutually exclusive. The Challenge Fly in the final stage involves clearing the stage as quickly as you can, for example, but S-Rank requires drawing it out as to farm the extra points.)
This game is a perfect slippery slope of addiction, and it's just so fun and lovely throughout that I couldn't help but fall in. I told myself that I wasn't going to, but that ended up being like telling myself I wasn't going to eat the last doughnut. I'm sorry, I tried to resist, but in my defense, it was just too delicious.
