Ecruteak was alwas kind of billed as this nonspecific "old-timey traditional" place, but the graphical and musical overhaul in HG/SS made it abundantly clear that no they mean Feudal Japan specifically.
Come to think of it, that explains why the GSC Ecruteak/Cianwood theme needed (and to our knowledge is the only once-single theme to receive?) two remade versions for HG/SS; the new Ecruteak version just does not sound culturally appropriate in Cianwood and vice versa. And why the Kimono Girls are such a huge part of the [whichever box art legendary appropriate for your game, so Lugia in our SoulSilver run] story. And why, of all the gym leader distribution options, Ecruteak is the home of Morty McGhostType of all people. And why... a lot of things, honestly.
I was a little confused about Bell Tower when we were looking for it because I didn't remember that one offhand (there's a Bellsprout Tower, but....) If that's the Tin Tower and they relocalized the name, then yeah, okay, that makes a lot of sense and is a major upgrade yes.
I'm really curious about that central pillar, yeah. Being flexible as a means of earthquake protection (at the cost of making it all creaky when you walk around in there,) sure, we can get that. But it really just... goes all the way up like that, without contacting anything except presumably the roof? With that much of a hole around it for clearance? That almost looks like you could use it as a fire pole or something. It's not an idea any of us ever would have had as far as, like, things that actually work and support a structure, but that's why we're not even modern architectural engineers, let alone historically-versed ones.
