It looks like DQ2 Famicom starts in the throne room of Midenhall (or Laurasia or whatever it was in the FC release) when the wounded guard comes up the stairs, announces Hargon's attack, and dies, at which point the king is like "you heard the man, get going" and proceeds to walk to the stairs and disappear down them.
Even that part alone is still miles ahead of anything the first game ever tried.
