I mean, uh, offer my thoughts.
We're not tackling any childhood white whales ourselves. We did that with Shining Force 2 and Final Fantasy 6 in the days before clan, and aside from that, what are my options? Trojan? 8 Eyes? No thanks and no thanks. I'm seriously racking my brain to try to think of any games that it bothered me to not clear, or to not clear "legitimately", and I'm coming up blank. Most of the games I never cleared pissed me off to the point of rage quitting them before I even considered beating them, and most of the ones I enjoyed all the way through, I cleared. There was never a "wow I love this game but I just Can't Do That" moment with me.
Maybe D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun... but ugh, going through first edition D&D rules again, and on the Genesis at that. Ugh. Same with Baldur's Gate. Both are just so much of a slog nowdays......
...I think where I stand on it is, well. "Maybe you don't need to beat every game". It's okay to walk away if you aren't having fun, and if you are having fun, then that's that. For some people the triumph makes the pain enjoyable. For other people, it doesn't, and they don't actually want to hurt. Does that mean game [x] isn't for them? Maybe, but that doesn't make them lesser, it just means it's not their thing.
Dark Souls is not for everyone. Not only is it dark as fuck (both in tone sense and in "can't see shit" sense), but it's kind of like a Platinum game in that it rewards deep zen-like understanding of the gameplay, and it's also kind of like a Sonic Team game in that it's jank as hell and part of understanding the gameplay is understanding what does and doesn't actually function like it should. That doesn't mean that people who are having troubles need to "git gud", but maybe playing it isn't for them. That's what LPs and longplays are for - so you can get the plot experience without having to endure the gameplay. And that's valid, that's legit. I wish more games had that available.
I dunno. It's a complicated mess of a nuanced thing, and it's being handled by capital-g Gamers who refuse to see anything but binary black and white.
