I suppose the lesson here is just that most people are so comfortably sure of their own perception of things that they never really think about it. It's not a thing that many of us are even ever _taught_ to consider at all. The possibility that someone we meet might be anything other than what they appear at first glance, especially in regards to transgenderism or the like, it's just not part of our upbringing.
And I mean we already have a gender-neutral third-person pronoun in English people just don't use it because it "sounds impolite" or something? Which really is kind of presumptuous of someone to assert their own standards onto others without even questioning whether they share those standards.
