From a purely logistical standpoint I've never understood why you'd pick a water (super-common) OR a grass (also super-common) starter when Fire pokemon are A: Hard to get and B: usually not available until like midway through any given game.
And then I look at the visual design of most of the fire starter pokemon and go "...oh that's why."
