Attention Team Hatoful: I just had the most terrifying speculation/theory about The King's verbal tic. (Even though I would be surprised if more than one of you caught that reference.)

Attention everyone else: Still a blind playthrough don't say anything etc.

I don't know what blows my mind more; the feasibility of your theory, or the fact that you caught it before I did.

Wow... I completely missed that, but... how can that fit so well?

I don't know what this means and I'm afraid to ask.

That's Ershin, one of the characters that joins your party in Breath of Fire IV. She spoke in a manner much like The King does, to the point that it seems like she's talking to/for someone else half the time. (DF's post above was a perfect example, if you replace "The King" and "King" with "Ershin.")

The armor she's wearing (which, for spoiler reasons, she never takes off) is built to protect its wearer from the effects of the Hex, a magically-supercharged bio-weapon that basically takes all the anguish of a tortured soul and physically manifests it, turning a sizable area into a poisonous, monster-filled hell.

I see! I am now less clueless but more scared.

Perhaps I shouldn't have been quite so clear on what the Hex was...but anyway, yeah, that whole talking-for-someone-else seems to be what Kjorteo was getting at.

Personally, though, I think this is just an overexaggerated case of The Royal We.

There is ... something up with Ershin (besides the obvious,) but I can't get into specifics because it's a major spoiler. (If you want a shorthand way to think of it for this stage of the game, though, pretend that inside the armor is

xviith_et_seq.) For those who have played the game and know what I'm talking about, I'm suggesting that The King might have a similar situation.

The Premchaia is amused by your comparison, even if she only partially understands it due to having read the relevant plot elements from places on the Web without acquiring any further context that might be behind them.

I meant at that point in the story, wherein she is just introduced with that boisterous conversation, and you don't know anything about her other than that she looks like a robot or some short creature in heavy robot-looking armor or something and she acts ... weird, and everyone else is like "um, okay o_o" and they just play along. I wasn't really referring to the reveal, although I suppose you could take it as a compliment that I have once again inadvertently compared you to a character who comes across as an oddball even though A) they eventually end up actually being right about something important, and B) they're awesome and among my favorite characters in their respective games.

Probably the best thing about Ershin, at least to me: One of her special attacks, "Stand Out." It makes all of the enemy units go after her for as long as she's on the front line, and it's absolutely hilarious when it goes off; one second she's charging a spell, the next...

BOOYA!!

Basically everything about Ershin is awesome. Even her voice is perfect for her personality, and this is a game that doesn't have actual voice acting (just things like her "Hi-yaa!" when doing a regular attack and such.)
