kjorteo: Sprite of the dead "boss" and "Sorry, I'm Dead" speech balloon from Monster Party. (Sorry - I'm dead.)

I would have preferred 19 werecorvids in public tbh

As the trotting plague continues to shut down civilization all around us, I figured I should give an update on how we're doing, for all concerned.

First off, we're okay. As of this writing, the body feels perfectly fine and healthy aside from some seasonal allergies. We were kind of already practicing social distancing in that the body lives alone, and I'm pretty sure Sara and Ardei are safe by virtue of being noncorporeal.

Not that there aren't drawbacks to that arrangement, of course. We filled out the census last night, or at least I did. Having to confirm my way through a zillion "Are you sure?" prompts that there was exactly one (1) person in this household... stung a bit, not going to lie, but... well, I'm not quite bold enough to make a move like that an official form. (Besides, if Sara and Ardei had legal recognition, we'd run into the problem of them having no documentation for anything.) I did put the body's sex down as Female, though, because fuck you.

Anyway, work is still on for now but that's probably changing soon. This week has been a cavalcade of daily teleconferences that contain no useful information whatsoever (we have another one this afternoon, wheeee) and overall panicked attempts to decide how to reconcile "Get everyone working remotely" with "we are a shipping warehouse, literally how do you do that." We've identified the stuff we could do from home (mostly the processing end of each order--updating the inventory logs, filling out the order forms and confirmations and shipping labels, that sort of thing) and will be coming in at least less often, starting next week.

The current plan is to have one person (from a two-person department--we'll take turns) here Monday/Wednesday/Friday while the other is remote, and we'll both be remote on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So, each week, one of us will come in twice and the other will come in once. That, too, will involve taking turns. I volunteered to take the first two-shift week. Thus, this week we're both here as normal, and next week I'll be in the office Monday and Friday. From next Tuesday through Thursday, I'll get to try out this hot new "working from home" trend that I hear is all the rage these days. (I sure hope the new company laptops come in by then!) The following week, I'd only come in Wednesday. I won't deny that that sounds pretty neat, actually, but with my luck that means this whole thing is going to blow over just before it's my turn to get a one-day workweek. But hey, if that happens, then I'll have successfully weaponized Murphy's Law to cure a global pandemic. You're welcome, world.

(Edit: My clerk's daughter works for the state prison and my clerk has been put into the higher risk pool (next to, like, if your spouse is an EMT, etc.) which means she's now top priority for staying 100% at home, which means nevermind I get to be the one to come in all three days every week. I knew that plan was too good to be true and that writing it down and telling anyone before it actually happened would put a curse on the whole thing. I knew that and that's why I never announce anything. Dumb mistake on my part. Fuck everything.)

We have a ticket for an upcoming broadcasting of AEW Dynamite in May, and hotel and registration for DenFur in August. Neither of those have been cancelled yet, to my knowledge, but I'm watching the update channels for each. Presumably if the bottom falls out of either of them, we can at least get a refund, so at least I'm not too worried about being out anything.

The late night night-before pre-release party for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is cancelled, though, which means we'll just have to wait until the actual release day (Friday) to become Tom Nook's personal indentured fucktoy. Alas.

As events become increasingly in peril and the world becomes increasingly shut in, we are escaping to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by coronavirus: VIDEO GAMES. There are tons of developers on Steam and itch.io offering their games at a huge discount, if not outright giving them away for free, to keep us entertained in these trying times. There are honestly too many to mention here, but if you have your personal favorites, please feel free to recommend them in the comments. As for us, we're going to aim somewhere a bit different for ours: Istaria. Oh, sure, there are a lot of hot new indies that are free and absolutely worth getting while they're free, and I'm sure they're all really good, too! Like, nothing against them at all. But good old Istaria (which is already free to play up until level 15, mind you) has turned on double experience for the next... indefinite while, and you're probably stuck at home anyway, so now's as good a time as any to come party like it's 2004.

So, that and Animal Crossing are probably where it's at for us, at least for the next little while. Look for this blog to become nothing but screenshots of our new town within the next few weeks, especially if trying to run a shippng department from home involves as much nothing-to-actually-do as I'm kind of expecting it will.

How are you all doing?
