Adventures in workday woodrats
Aug. 22nd, 2018 12:44 pmMy office is across the street from a mall, which has a GameStop. Nintendo is doing one of those "get a card with a code on it from your local GameStop" Mystery Gift giveaways until Firday, where you can get Groudons and Kyogres in Pokemon S/M/US/UM. I figured I could use my lunch break to head over there, get those, and get some to-go food from Panera Bread (also in the mall) on my way back Because I am a responsible adult and I can arbitrarily decide to spend my lunch break on Pokemon.
The GameStop had an entire stack of NES Classics in the back behind the counter, which surprised me. I knew they were bringing those back, but I guess people aren't making a run on them anymore this time? Huh. News to me!
The clerk and I had a short friendly conversation about that very subject, which mostly boiled down to "Man, fuck those scalpers, though." He was cool. I ended up buying one. (The price dropped since the last run, too!) I already have one from the last time they made them, but this will make an awesome birthday/Christmas present someday.
Panera was an interesting experience. They have delicious tortelloni alfredo pasta that's like one of my favorite things, but I really have to be careful with them. Today marks the second time in a row I've ordered it and received the chicken tortelloni alfredo instead, which is the same thing but with chicken. Sorry, guys. I'm veegtarian. :( I ended up having to stay later than expected because they had to remake the order.
The manager offered me a free pastry of my choosing as their way of apologizing. I wasn't expecting that, and I honestly didn't consider the mixup a big enough deal to cause a fuss or anything, but... if they're offering free pastries, sure why not? The manager then handed me off to one of the clerks, instructing them to "take care of this young man." Sigh.
The clerk was amazing, though, and was the whole reason why I'm bothering to blog about my lunch break errands. The clerk immediately noticed (and gave me really nice compliments about <3) my shirt, probably saw the purse too, and said, "I'm guessing your preferred pronouns are 'she'?" We then had a really great conversation about that. They apologized even harder for the manager having called me a guy, and I was like... eh, no worries, it happens. I know I don't pass yet; I can dress the part but I still need a kjhgpillion more electrolysis sessions to convince anyone. I'm kind of used to it, you know? They related, saying they were gender-neutral but everyone called them "she" and it's like... yeah. It happens. Alas. But at least they got it, and were super friendly, and you know, we kind of had a moment there. :)
Plus I got a free cinnamon roll.
All in all, not a bad little excursion! I was late back to work, blew my diet hard, and will undoubtedly have gained five pounds by tomorrow morning, but I got a (spare) NESC, some free pastries and Pokemon, and a little reminder that there are some awesome people out there.
