COMPLETE: Sprout
Jul. 5th, 2018 05:50 pmI was in the mood for something light and nibbly, and this was free and looked cute, relaxing, and about ten minutes long. (It was actually seventeen minutes long, which by my standards means "wow this was a lot heftier with more content than I was expecting." My standards are depressing.)
Sprout is a short freeware... I guess puzzle game? You are a seed born of a coconut tree, with the power to grow instantly into whatever tree forms you know, which may or may not cause a thing to happen, and then you respawn as a seed again. At first, your only move is to turn into another coconut tree, but that causes the coconut (you) to drop and travel to the right, where it meets a dandelion, and now you have a second form.
Your goal is to make it to the grove of acorn trees far off in the distance, which involves solving some form-based chain-of-events puzzles to clear the way for you to keep moving right. ("I need to attract that bird somehow... is that an apple tree in the valley down there? Maybe if I go coconut and roll downhill, get that, and dandelion-fly my way back up....") You learn more forms along the way, the puzzles get a bit trickier toward the end, you know, solid puzzle game progression.
Add in a charming hand-drawn aesthetic, and you have a brief but very pleasant and enjoyable experience.
