Maybe someday I'll beat a game that normal people play and that doesn't require an explanation. Today is not that day.

Don't Make Love is a relationship navigation exercise about two mantises who want to take their relationship to the next level but are worried about... you know. Nomf.

You play as one partner or the other, and use a text parser to give simple (but not too simple; they notice and get annoyed if you give one-word "Yeahs" at everything) answers to their statements, or you can smile, look surprised, hold hands, kiss, etc. Your partner has something that's been weighing on them and that they need to get off their chest, and your job is to hear them out and respond appropriately. It's sort of like the infamous Facade, only with far easier-to-take-seriously graphics and sound, fewer bugs (ironically,) and less of an overreaction when you ask about melons.

This game is kind of a weird premise on the surface that probably just appealed to me because I'm a massive furry and "Oh no try not to have sex even when you're really tempted to because that would be a terrible idea~" is, like, all kinds of up my alley. Take a look at the Achievements, though. This game gets deep.

Much like Farnham Fables, this game is about five minutes long per run, but it's meant to be replayed and explored as the conversation can go in quite a few directions. I have one ending each in male and female runs (unsurprisingly for my personality and playstyle, both were "Thank you for listening to me, I love you, let's do this, our love should allow us to survive, I trust you <3" variants) but I'll very gladly hold onto this and be happy it's there for whenever the urge to fuck a bug get all shmoopy like that returns. It's gorgeous, it's sweet, it's charming, and you find the weirdest recs on my blog I know but this was nice.

Just, you know. Be mindful of the "it's about five minutes long per run" status versus the fact that it's so replayable versus your own comfort level with dooming things (I'm not sure I have the heart to make these two break up just to see what happens) versus etc. when considering whether to buy this not-on-sale. You're not going to get hundreds of hours out of it or anything. But it's lovely and worth experiencing if you're into this sort of thing.
