So far, Battle Kid's difficulty and pacing are definitely what I would call "tough, but fair." It certainly doesn't take it easy on you, and I have many a time felt the "oh please please please let there be a continue point up ahead" longing after going through a series of challenging rooms, and the triumphant "OH THANK GOD" when there is. However, I have yet to feel like it's gone too far or held out for too long without a continue point. It pushes it right up to the edge sometimes (nine-room loop to get the high jump power I HATE YOU AAAAAHHHH) but has yet to actually cross the line from "man, this is hard" territory into "man, this game design is stupid," at least so far.

That being said, all difficulties above Normal are for crazy people. (Difficulty level does not affect anything in the actual game itself, just whether you get 0, 20, 50, or infinite lives, whether you get passwords, and whether you start with the Easy Mode Mockery item that doubles the amount of damage your shots do and turns your suit bright pink. Normal is...normal, what the game is supposed to be like without crazy challenge runs, and has infinite lives, passwords, and no mockery upgrade.) I have undoubtedly long since died more than 50 times in my Normal game, probably well into the triple digits by now but I'm not actually counting. There's just too much... I don't want to say trial and error because that implies I Wanna Be the Guy-esque deception (where the penalty for not knowing in advance exactly what crazy traps the sadistic developer put in this room or exactly which step you take that triggers their out-of-nowhere appearance is death) and Battle Kid is surprisingly forthright for something that looks like it was so suspiciously heavily inspired by IWBTG. However, even if you can tell what you're up against at a glance and not have any nasty surprises, there's definitely still a sense of... keep trying this room until you're awesome enough to do it right (and the next and so on until the next continue point) with near-IWBTG amounts of dying until then.

Anyway, this game is really fun. <3
