I AM SO HAPPY.
It's actually interesting. At first, I thought it was kind of lame that you had to go through story mode one game at a time before you had access to them in free play mode--isn't the point of Retro Game Challenge to be able to play the delicious retro games? However, it's actually brilliantly handled, with unlocking each new game put forward in the form of advancing to its release date. Meanwhile, you have frequently updating GameFan magazines to read as your friend keeps periodically buying the new issue. The magazines are amazing--between the cheat codes, sneak previews of upcoming games, top five sales charts, and columns from a revolving door of editors-in-chief who keep announcing their retirement about three issues in, it really captures the more-than-a-magazine feeling of being a Nintendo Power kid. Add to that the ability to chat with your friend (who mentions "my friend's brother at school told me"-style video game rumors, and even made an indirect reference to The Wizard at one point) and the game manuals (complete with "don't store this cartridge in extreme hot or cold temperatures, don't directly touch the connectors, etc." warnings,) and it's more like being trapped in retro gaming culture than just merely having some faux-retro games to play.
